Lyophilized

Lyophilized means freeze-dried — the dry powder or small “cake” inside a peptide vial that you mix with liquid before use.

On a peptide vial, lyophilized is the state of what’s inside before you add any liquid: a dry, often flaky or puck-shaped solid sometimes called a “cake.” It got there by lyophilization — freeze-drying — where the material is frozen and the water is pulled off under vacuum, leaving the peptide behind in a stable dry form.

Why it matters when you’re looking at a vial

A lyophilized vial can’t be drawn from as-is. Because the contents are dry, there’s a step between opening the box and measuring a dose: you add a measured volume of liquid — usually bacteriostatic water — to dissolve the powder. That step is reconstitution, and the amount of liquid you add sets the concentration, which is what actually determines how much sits in each unit on your syringe.

The dry “cake” can look small, cracked, or stuck to the side of the vial — that’s normal for a freeze-dried product and doesn’t tell you anything about how much peptide is present. The label states the amount; the appearance doesn’t.

Lyophilized vs. reconstituted

  • Lyophilized — the dry, freeze-dried powder. Stable, nothing to measure yet.
  • Reconstituted — after you’ve added the diluent, now a liquid solution with a known concentration you can draw from.

Is lyophilized the same as freeze-dried?

Yes. Lyophilization is the technical name for freeze-drying — freezing the material and then removing the water under vacuum so it turns straight from ice to vapour. “Lyophilized” and “freeze-dried” describe the same thing.

Why are peptides lyophilized?

Peptides are far more stable as a dry powder than in solution, so they are freeze-dried for shipping and storage and reconstituted with liquid only when needed. The dry form is why a vial has to be mixed before anything can be drawn from it.

Does lyophilized powder need to be refrigerated?

Storage depends on the specific product and its label — some lyophilized vials are shelf-stable and some are not, and once reconstituted the storage window usually changes. Follow the storage instructions printed on your vial; this definition does not replace them.
