A diluent is the liquid you add to a dry powder to dissolve it — for peptide vials, that liquid is usually bacteriostatic water.
A diluent is simply the liquid used to dissolve or dilute something. On a peptide vial, the diluent is the liquid you add to the lyophilized powder during reconstitution so it turns into a solution you can draw from.
Which diluent peptide vials typically call for
Most multi-dose peptide vials are reconstituted with bacteriostatic water, which contains a small amount of preservative so the vial can be entered more than once without needing to be used all at once. A small number of products specify a different diluent — plain sterile water, saline, or a diluent supplied by the manufacturer alongside the vial. The specific vial’s own instructions determine which diluent it calls for; “diluent” as a term just describes the role that liquid plays, not a single fixed product.
Why the diluent volume is the number that matters
The diluent’s job is to dissolve the powder into a known volume of liquid. Once that volume is set, the vial’s total content divided by that volume gives the resulting concentration. Adding more diluent produces a more dilute solution; adding less produces a more concentrated one. The powder amount in the vial doesn’t change — only how much liquid it’s spread across.
Because concentration depends entirely on how much diluent was used, the reconstitution chart shows the concentration produced by common vial amounts and diluent volumes — it provides arithmetic reference information, nothing more.
