Reconstitution is dissolving a lyophilized powder into a liquid so it becomes a solution with a known, calculable concentration.

Reconstitution is the step of adding a liquid to a dry powder so it dissolves back into a solution. For a peptide vial, that means taking the lyophilized — freeze-dried — contents and mixing in a measured volume of diluent, usually bacteriostatic water, so what was a dry cake becomes a clear liquid you can draw from.

Why the powder needs this step at all

A lyophilized powder has no usable volume on its own — you can’t measure a dry solid in milliliters or draw it into a syringe. Reconstitution converts it into a liquid so volume becomes meaningful. Once dissolved, a given number of milliliters corresponds to a known amount of the original powder, because nothing was added except the diluent itself.

Concentration is the output of reconstitution

The amount of liquid used to reconstitute a vial directly sets its concentration: the same vial mixed with a smaller volume of diluent produces a stronger solution per milliliter, and a larger volume produces a weaker one. Neither is “correct” in isolation — the resulting concentration is simply the vial’s total content divided by the total liquid volume.
