Half-life
Half-life is the time it takes for the amount of a substance in the body to drop to half of what it was.
Half-life is a pharmacology concept describing speed of elimination: it’s the amount of time it takes for the quantity of a substance present in the body to decrease by half. If a substance has a half-life of, say, a few hours, then a few hours after it peaks, roughly half of that amount remains; after another interval of the same length, roughly a quarter remains — and so on, in a repeating pattern.
Why the concept exists
Every substance the body processes — including peptides — is broken down or cleared at some rate. Half-life is the standard way pharmacology expresses that rate as a single number, so that two compounds’ elimination speeds can be compared on the same terms. A short half-life means a substance clears relatively quickly; a long half-life means it lingers relatively longer.
